School-based health centers

What is a school-based health center (SBHC)?

An SBHC provides convenient access to comprehensive, primary and preventive physical and mental health services for public school students at the school site.

“If your child has a chronic illness, such as asthma or diabetes, you’ll need to plan ahead for any medical care your child may require at school,” says JoAnn Derbonne, RN, Director of CHRISTUS Cabrini’s School-Based Health Centers. “And the role of the school-based health center is to ensure your child receives the highest level of care possible.”

What is the role of staff?

A multidisciplinary team of health care professionals staffs each SBHC. “The staff includes a physician, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant, registered nurse, social worker or mental health worker, and clinic clerk,” Derbonne says.

The SBHC also has linkages with CHRISTUS Cabrini Hospital and other providers to accept referrals for complex health problems and to provide services to students during hours when the SBHC is not open.

What services are provided?

Most visits to the SBHC are for diagnosis and treatment of a simple illness or minor injury; immunizations; physical examinations, including sports physicals; preventive health visits, including EPSDT screening; and mental health and psychosocial counseling.

“Having on-site health personnel and services allow many children with special health care needs to participate in the regular classroom,” Derbonne says. “Students with chronic health problems are monitored and receive appropriate therapy, allowing them to stay in school.” Other services that may be offered by SBHCs include dental screening and referral.

How are parents involved?

Parental involvement is an integral part of school-based health care. CHRISTUS Cabrini’s SBHCs provide health care services to students under the age of 18 with the written consent of the parent or guardian of the student. “Parents are strongly encouraged to visit the health center with their children when possible,” Derbonne says.

Prevention is the key! “School-based health centers are prevention-oriented,” Derbonne says. “A sore throat or earache treated in the emergency room is very expensive considering emergency room costs, lost wages for a working parent and loss of daily attendance revenue for the school.”

Because many children can be treated at school for minor illness and injury, chronic illness, and special health care needs, daily attendance is increased—providing the school with maximum revenue.

What makes SBHCs successful?

SBHCs work because they are located where the kids are. The services are easily accessible, located in a familiar environment and offered by teams of health care professionals who address a wide range of health care needs.

SBHCs provide affordable health care services for a large number of previously underserved children and adolescents in Louisiana.
