Most patients are accepted into the program on referrals from their primary physician based on the result of a biopsy or concern regarding their condition. Additionally, their course of treatment may involve surgical intervention and further diagnostic work to determine the best options available for their care.

Support services
CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini HospitalÍs Center for Cancer Care believes in a dignified, compassionate approach to cancer treatment for the whole person. Supportive services are offered to patients, family members, friends and the community on an ongoing basis. Patients receiving chemotherapy and radiation therapy are seen by a chaplain, a dietitian, an occupational therapist and a social worker. Assessments or screenings are completed on patients to assess and monitor their needs, and referral is made to the appropriate resource according to the need.
Other services include various disease-specific support and bereavement groups, hospice care, pain control, coping skills, free cancer screenings and multi-modality case conferences. A broad range of social work services is provided to address the many concerns patients and families may have when initially diagnosed with cancer. A social work assessment is completed on new chemotherapy and radiation therapy patients during their initial course of treatment. Social workers also offer other comprehensive services, such as interventions to assist in coping with the emotional aspects of the disease and the treatment process, emotional support, education, community resource planning, discharge planning, facilitation of support groups and program development.
The spiritual care department provides spiritual support and prayer. Prayers and communion are offered daily in the Cancer Center to patients and their families.
A certified grief counselor is available to resolve grief issues and facilitate bereavement support groups. The bereavement groups meet monthly and are available to the cancer patients and families, as well as to the community.
